The cardiovascular system must work harder because the blood volume in the body increases by as much as fifty percent to support the placenta and the growing fetus. Because the blood volume is higher, the heart must beat more frequent so that the heart can move extra fluid and ensure that oxygen and nutrients reaches both the pregnant person and the baby. The change in heart rate is a gradual process, and the change in heart rate follows the development of the baby.

The body does not return to its original state immediately after childbirth, and it takes weeks or month for the blood volume to decrease. Because the blood volume takes time to decrease, the heart will take time to settle back into its original rhythm.

During the first few weeks of the postpartum period, the heart is still recalibrating, and the heart is still recovering from the work performed during the pregnancy.
