Ideal Body Weight, or IBW, helps to estimate what weight a person should have according to his height, gender and sometimes age. It seems quite easy but causes problems when Athletes appear in the equation. IBW is not an ideal tool for measure.
It ignores the amounts of fat and muscles in the body of people. Because of that, even very strong and healthy Athletes can seem too heavy according to his IBW.
Why IBW and BMI Are Not Right for Athletes
Various methods help to figure out IBW. For males one commonly takes the height in centimetres, removes 100 and then shrinks the result by 10 percent. For females the same base counts, but with a 15 percent reduction.
For instance, a female of 5’6″ weighing 80 kg would have IBW at 59.3 kg, so excess of 20.7 kg. For a man of 190 cm the Devine formula points to 87.3 kg for IBW, which gives BMI of 24.2. Those formulas intend to keep IBW in the healthy range of BMI for avreage adults.
One uses BMI to check if Body Weight is healthy, and it depends on height. A person is obese if he passes his IBW by 30 percent. Even so BMI has gaps.
It does not account for healthy muscle mass, for fat spread or for waist size. An athlete can have much muscle, but BMI simply treats it as extra wait.
Here is the main trouble. An athlete can pass his IBW weight, but stay healthy thanks to bigger muscle mass. The results of BMI for professional Athletes commonly err.
Results of BMI for Athletes like Exclusive Rome and Russell Wilson do not show their real shape. When one applies BMI to big groups of people, it works well, because almost all do not have athletic bodies. Assuming normal build and middle height, BMI works well for the whole population.
Formulas for IBW less answer for Athletes or very active people with more muscles. They also fail for older adults, whose body structure changed with time, for people from groups not included in the making of the formulas and for those whose weight differs from IBW but who have good signs of health. One can estimate the lean body mass by means of Boer, Hume and James methods, and FFMI helps especially for Athletes.
The BMI limit of 25 and up targets people with average muscle mass, usually around 20 to 25 percent of body fat. If one replaces more than half of that fat with muscles, the patternsadjust greatly. IBW shows a general view, but for Athletes it commonly errs.
