In the world of gym, the Smith machine have a bad reputation. Lifting purist will write off its fixed bar path as something for novices, but they’re totally missing the point. A Smith machine is not a substitute for a barbell squat.
It’s a precision instrument. You can load your legs up and control how stable each lift are. You can develop some serious strength doing so without having the shear forces through your spine when holding onto a bar loaded with hundreds of pound across your back.
It’s all about weight. And it’s all about leverage. The Smith machine is primarily viewed as vertical lift assist by most folks.

First: Move your feet forward from under the bar. When your feet is right beneath the bar, it’s easier for your body to pull with your lower back and hips in a vertical direction. Instead, slide your feet out six or a dozen inches in front of the barbell.
Correct Foot Position for Quad Engagement
This minor adjustment shifts whole geometry of your squat. Your torso must lean forward slightly to keep weight over your midfoot. This forward lean increase the tension on your quadriceps, transforming the exercise from a hip hinge into a deep knee bend.
The greater the angle, then the greater work required by your quads. The first lever is that foot position control which muscles you use. To engage more thigh muscle (while feeling that in the quads), stand with feet wider apart and toes slightly turned out, opening up hips for increased range of motion.

If you only squat halfway then you’re not getting anywhere near as much out of it. Fortunately with the fixed track you can go deep without worrying about balance, keeping that big weight off your head! Lower into machine until you hit your body’s limit; trust the machine.
If your heels come off the floor at depth adjust your stance a little shorter (or work on some ankle mobility). You want full range of motion; doing partial reps is just practicing partial reps. Squats on a Smith machine are all about control; controlled tension and controlled strength.
Setting Safeties for Training to Failure
Set the safeties just under where you would lower down to the bottom of the movement. You know how low to go. The safety catch is there for an exit, so you don’t have to worry about going to failure.
So you know you can goes a little harder. This allow you to fatigue the muscle safely. Train until you reach failure, but not by increasing the weight.
It happens when you lose good form. The beauty of the smith machine is that its fixed path remove the need for balance. Only pure muscular force remains.
Use this to your advantage for building leg strength while sparing back. That’s the tradeoff. You should of used more weight earlier too.
Actualy, it is a moddern way to train. It feels much more luxurius than old style lifting. Everything dissapears when you reach failure.
