Keep the pace band wider in open water. Pool pace can be a useful anchor, but current, turns, starts, sighting, and pack behavior can move final pace more than fitness alone.
Use sighting as a skill, not a panic button. In chop or crowds, sight briefly and often enough to protect the line; in calm water, relax the head lift and var rhythm carry more of the pace.
