What Muscles Do Kettlebell Swings Work

On paper, the kettlebell swing look easy. Hinge at the hips, snap your glutes and toss the weight to chest height. But in that split second of sudden force, it fires more muscle fiber than most people do in an hour-long treadmill session.

It’s not about picking up the bell with your arms. Rather, it’s about creating force from your posterior chain and allowing that force to ripple throughout your body. Knowing what muscles is firing during each step will alter both your training and how long it takes to see results.

For many, the swing have become a piece of cardio equipment at the gym: Grab a lightweight bell, go fast and feel your heart beating. There’s no question that the swing gets the blood pumping, but most people ignore its muscular reward. A swing is a kinetic chain exercise.

Core Bracing and Torso Control

The rest of your body is working all the time to stabilize your torso: Your core muscles, including your deep transverse abdominis, your obliques and your rectus abdominis, work to maintain a straight line and protect your internal organs. During a swing, you’re not crunching.

You’re bracing. Imagine someone just punched you in the gut. What would happen?

You tense up, that’s the same thing you do here. It keep a straight line between your shoulders and hips while protecting your innards. If you don’t have that core braced, all the power coming off your legs fades before it ever gets to the kettlebell.

Upper Body Support and Posture

Your upper-back and shoulders has an important, though supportive, function. Keeping your chest open and your arms straight is supported by your trapezius and latissimus dorsi (lats) muscles.

Staying erect and resisting the pull of the kettlebell, preventing it from rounding your shoulders. Also relies on your lats and trapezius. Endurance in your rear delts and gripping strength increase as well.

At the end of a set, you may feel fatigued in both your shoulders and your forearms. That’s par for the course. The muscles is doing their job…

Keeping your form rigid against the weight’s momentum. Maintaining good posture during the repetitive exercise also require strong shoulders. Your forearms and hands take a decent beating as well.

Grip Strength Development

Gripping a weighted kettlebell takes a good amount of grip strength. Your set will come to an early end if your hands fails prior to your hips. For most novices, this is a limiting factor.

Over time, the swing develops crushing grip strength. They also strengthens both wrist flexors and extensors. This functional strength carries over into other lifts and everyday life.

You’ll be able to carry more groceries or pick up a kid with ease. Often the weakest link in the body’s movement is the grip; when you improve it, you unlock greater potential in your larger muscle group.

There’s no hurrying it. A good place to start is with a lighter weight to learn how to use the hip hinge. Stretch those hamstrings.

Get those glutes firing. Make sure your core remains tight and your lower back doesn’t round. Once you’re confident in your form, add some weight.

Don’t try to get as high as possible; instead, focus on swinging faster and more forcefully off of your hips. At the top of the arc, the kettlebell should be almost weightless if performed properly. This feeling of effortlessness is what rewards you.
