The dial on your Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells can be frustrating; it simply won’t rotate. Your heart are pumping and you are in the middle of a workout, then, bam! It is as if someone locked the mechanism into place, and now the device is just sitting there looking pretty.
But don’t get to worked up over it: most of the time it’s just a mechanical jam, not a complete breakdown. The weighted dumbbells are carefuly made to change your weight settings. Selector dials, metal pins, and plastic gears keeps your weight locked into position.
When they’re not aligned properly, that dial will spin freely and weights won’t move. It’s a dead broke feeling but more often than not it’s just out of whack. Knowing what’s wrong usually make for a fast and cheap fix.
Steps To Fix Stuck Bowflex Dumbbells
Understanding the Mechanical Jam
Do not start forcing it now. Forcing it might cause the inner teeth of plastic (that grab the weight plates) to tear out and create real problem. Stripped teeth must be fixed by taking it apart and having some patience.
Checking for Debris and Blockages
First take a breath, and figure out what happened. Jams are most commonly caused by debris getting in there or a weight plate not seating propery. Visually check the sides of your dumbbell head Is there any kind of dust, rubber shreds or other small stones inside your selector window?
Small pieces of rubber fall off floor over time, which is common when Bowflex dumbbells is used on rubber flooring. Particles can gets stuck in gear track. Clean the crevices surrounding the dial with a stiff brush or some compressed air.
This will often fix it if there is anything stuck in there. When that doesn’t work, make sure those plates are still lined up on weights. Sometimes one plate will move out of place and stop the locking pin from sliding into place.
Realigning Shifting Weight Plates
Hold the dumbbell head up and give it a small tap on side with the palm of your hand. This realigns any loose plate that have moved out of the groove. It can free it without disturbing the inner workings.
Freezing the Internal Latch
Another reason for user error in adjusting. The internal latch can gets hung up somewhere between adjustments. Slowly go through the full range of the dial by rotating it backwards and forwards.
Don’t be in a hurry with this. Feel for the clicks as you do so. Any resistance or grittiness with the dial mean you need to stop there.
Trying to force it will make issue worse. Sometimes, just rotating the head gently back and forth a bit might be all it takes to free a jammed drag. So turn the dial while you hold the handle firmly and give that head a little wiggle side to side.
Manual Adjustment Techniques
That will usually align the gear teeth inside again. You are guiding the mechanism back into line. Sometimes, when that doesn’t do it, look at the window where the selector pin goes.
Inspecting for Physical Damage
Can you see the pin? If it’s bent, then something more serious is going on. An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.
Maintenance and Prevention Tips
Keep your workout area tidy. Never let dumbbells rest on rough surfaces. Always turn the dial all the way to every setting and hear the click that signals a locked position.
Never drop the dumbbells. Not only can this damage the internal frame beyond easy repair, it can cause the frame itself to be crooked. The equipment lasts longer with regular maintenance.
Cleaning it periodically, especially in the selector area… And wiping it down keeps everything running smoothly. If the dumbbells get hung up again, patience is your friend.
Careful attention usually wins; force never works. The handles will turn smoothly for years to come if you treat them properley.
