Even if you train hard enough that you appear to have broader shoulders in the mirror, your scale won’t reflect this. Why? Because the scale isn’t a good way to track progress. It lumps your bodyweight together as if it’s all equal (muscle + fat = weight). It doesn’t distinguish between them.

To make true progress visible, you must distinguish between fat and lean mass. Your scale doesn’t do that. A better indicator of naturally progress is your FFMI, which stands for the Fat-Free Mass Index. The FFMI is a measure of muscle compared to body size (height). So it lets us compare apples-to-apples even though we’re talking about folks with various heights.

Why Your Scale Is Wrong and How to Check Real Progress

Raw weight will always reward the taller individual since they have more tissue to work with. (A six-footer has more muscle on his bones than a five-foot lifter.) To level the playing field, the index use mass divided by height-squared. So the bigger you get, the harder it is to increase your score.

Run the numbers yourself in the calculator above; it’s cool and all, but knowing the logic is way better then pushing a button. Are you gaining proportionate amounts of muscle to your frame? Or are you putting on additional pounds that decrease your leanness?

This metric has been confusing as most people uses the unadjusted version. Taller people gets penalized in the standard calculation, because it implies they have lower density potential than shorter people. The adjustment factor removes this bias by applying a multiplier to anyone above some height threshold. This way, a tall person won’t appear like an outlier purely due to their long limbs.

If you don’t correct for this, you’re already skewing your data. It’s what separates discouragement from accurate progress. The biggest source of error in the equation is body fat percentage. Underestimating your body fat by two percentage points can skew the estimated lean mass upwards. This results in an inflated FFMI reading.

It’s better not to sweat getting it perfect; just use consistent measurements. That could be visual estimates, a smart scale, or caliper readings. Consistency matters more than chasing perfection, so just make sure you’re tracking your progress over time.

Where does your score fall on this chart? Your score falls into one of four buckets: elite, advanced, athletic, and fit. How do these relate to other people? They’re bands that put things in perspective for you.

But there’s a natural limit. Everyone has one. And while it differs from person to person, most men will have difficulty exceeding a FFMI of 24+ with only diet and exercise. Most women finds their returns diminish after an FFMI of 21+. Why? Well, this is decided by your genetic makeup (your hormones; your muscle fiber distribution; your recovery ability).

Straining to exceed those levels frequently leads to either a false sense of accomplishment or unhealthy behavior patterns. By understanding your own ceiling, you can realistically set goals focused more on sustainable gains. Rather than attempting to crack the code, you change your perspective to maximizing efficiency within the system.

How much does the tool take into account? One very important factor is training age: You’ll see massive jumps in FFMI in your first few months of resistance training as your body adjusts. After that, an advanced lifter will gain fractions of a point over months/years.

You can also use the tool to input your lifting experience in order to provide some context: Are you still sitting at 18 with a decade of training? Maybe you need to address some programming issues. Did you hit 22 in six months? That sounds like either exceptional responsiveness or you’re inflating your inputs.

You don’t want to get hung up on this number. This is just another piece of information. You want to look at it alongside other things like your waist measurement, weight lifting achievements, and how your clothing fits. If you’re seeing an increase in FFMI and a decrease in weight. Congratulations, you’re probably recomping well. If you’re seeing both increase, maybe you’re accumulating more fat than muscle. It’s about the whole picture, not any individual number.

Don’t use the bathroom scale to make training choices or judge your self-worth. The scale is a blunt instrument for capturing the nuance of body composition. For a more accurate picture of your physical development, compare lean mass with your height. Respect your natural limitations. Track the trend. Adjust based off the data, not ego. You see what you see in the mirror. The data shows the reason.
