Body fat percentage shows how much of your total body weight is made up of fat. The less fat percentage, the bigger part of the weight comes from lean muscle mass on your skeleton. Body fat divides into essential and stored.

Healthy range of body fat for men usually is 8-19%, while for women it reaches 21-33%. Too much body fat causes many health problems, but too little fat also can have negative effects. Ideal body fat percentages divide into separate groups.

For men essential fat forms 2-5%, athletes have 6-13%, fitness level is 14-17%, acceptable is 18-24% and obesity starts at 25% or more. Women have essential fat level of 10-13%, athletes 14-20%, fitness 21-24%, acceptable 25-31% and obesity 32% or more.

Many fitness models reach 5-7% body fat range before photo shoots. Here muscles still show very well and stay a bit of definition, but striations are not as marked as in 1-4%. To stay at such fat level requires strong devotion to training and diet together with a lot of hard work.

Difference of 2% between 10% and 12% can seem huge. Every person has different distribution of body fat and the amount of lean muscle strongly affects how you look. A person with more muscles can seem to have higher fat percentage.

At same weight some maybe are very muscular with low fat or untrained with more fat. Bigger muscular mass involves more of the body weight, so fat stays with less.

BMI counts weight and height to estimate body fat amount, but ignores muscle mass, bone density or whole body composition. It can estimate muscular people as overweight and call inactive folks with little muscle healthy. Body fat percentage directs to the ratio between fat and other tissues.

No single method counts body fat percentage perfectly accurately. Popular way is skinfold measurement by means of calipers. Gold standard is DEXA, if budget allows.

The Navy method uses measurements of various body parts. Some genes help certain folks keep fewer visceral fat even in higher body fat percentages, and they mostly have better health results than those with high visceral fat amountthey
