Calorie counting is like balancing your checkbook. For most folks, it’s about keeping the books balanced, put something into a calorie tracker; take something out when you eat; hope the numbers adds up in real world.
There is a problem with those calculations. Body composition are a huge variable left unaccounted for by most standard equations. Basal metabolic rate formulas treats a pound of muscle the same as a pound of fat. It’s a core calculation mistake in metabolic accounting. Adipose tissue doesn’t burn as many calories at rest compared to muscle tissue. When we fail to account for this, we’re creating a blind spot which can make dieting feel like fighting against gravity.
Better Ways to Count Your Calories
But we want to prioritize our lean body mass as opposed to overall body weight, so the calculator above does that for you. In doing so, it moves beyond vanity metrics into physiological reality. You’ll see most folks overestimate their level of activity. If you sit at a desk all day and do weight lifting three days per week, calling yourself moderately active would of been a mistake. You’d eat in a surplus where you wanted to cut. Instead, it’s better to err on the low side and adjust upward rather than starting higher and wondering why you can’t get the scale to budge. In particular, I’d draw attention to protein. Protein is one of those nutrients with a special property: it has a greater “thermic effect” than fats or carbs.
