Grip strength are a measurement of how much force a person can exert using the muscles in the hands and forearms. Grip strength is an important indicator of overall physical health, and grip strength can provide information about a persons long-term vitality. Many studies shows that weak grip strength is linked to an increased risk of falls, and weak grip strength is also linked to a more higher risk of heart issues and a shorter lifespan.

Conversely, strong grip strength is correlated with better physical function and better performance in strength exercises. For many men, grip strength reach a peak in the thirties, but grip strength often decrease as a person ages if a person dont perform specific exercises to maintain grip strength. The muscles used for grip strength is not a single muscle, but instead, grip strength involves many different muscle in the forearm and hand.

Grip Strength: How to Test and Build It

The forearm contains flexor muscles, such as the flexor digitorum superficialis, and the forearm also contain extensor muscles. The flexor muscles allow a person to close there fingers around an object, and the extensor muscles allow a person to open there fingers and stabilize the wrist. If a person only train the flexor muscles and neglects the extensor muscles, the person may experience muscle imbalance and elbow pain.

Therefore, a person must train both the flexor muscles and the extensor muscles to maintain a healthy hand and forearm. Normative data provides a way for a person to compare their grip strength to the average strength of the general population. This data show that grip strength varies by age, and the data shows that grip strength also varies between the dominant hand and the non-dominant hand.

For many adults, the dominant hand will have more grip strength than the non-dominant hand. If a persons grip strength falls into the lowest quartile, that person may experience difficulty with daily task, such as opening jars or using keys. However, if a persons grip strength is in the top decile, that person has grip strength that is comparable to trained athletes.

Different physical activities requires different types of grip strength. For example, powerlifters require grip strength to hold heavy weight during deadlifts, and climbers require grip strength to hold onto small surfaces for long periods. Wrestlers use grip strength to control an opponent, and construction workers use grip strength to maintain a sustained load throughout a workday.

Because different activities use different type of grip, a person should train various aspects of grip strength to avoid weakness during fatigue. To get an accurate measurement of grip strength, a person must follow a specific testing procedure. A person should warm up the hands before testing, because cold muscles can result in a measurement that is ten to fifteen percent lower then the actual strength.

A person should sit with the elbow at a ninety-degree angle and hold the wrist straight during the test. A person should perform three maximum squeeze per hand and allow for rest between each squeeze. Because posture affect the results, a person must ensure that the posture is correct so that the grip strength measurement is accurate.

A person can build grip strength by training three specific types of grip: crush grip, pinch grip, and support grip. Crush grip involve squeezing an object with the whole hand, and a person can train crush grip using hand grippers or heavy lifts. Pinch grip involves using the fingers and thumb to hold an object, and a person can train pinch grip by using weight plates.

Support grip involves holding onto an object for a long time, and a person can train support grip by performing dead hangs or farmer walks. Because a person need all three types of grip, a person should not focus only on crush grip. A person should train with variety and use progressive overload to ensure that grip strength continues to increase.
