Body fat percentage measures what part of total body weight is fat compared to lean body mass. The total mass of fat divided by total body mass, times 100, gives the body fat percentage. Healthy levels depend on age and sex.
Women naturally have more body fat than men. For a normal woman it is around 25 percent, while for men only 15 percent. Women need more fat because of pregnancy and other hormonal functions.

For women the essential fat is around 8-10 percent. A level of 10-12 percent is considered the essential body fat, that is needed for life functions and reproduction. Going lower than that is not safe.
Even professional female bodybuilders do not reach under 12 percent. Between 10-13 percent fat barely is enough for basic survival needs.
For women the healthy range of body fat percentage is about 18-28 percent. Those between 21-31 percent, according to age, fall in normal limits for good health. This range helps balance metabolism with disease risks.
Above 32 percent one considers obesity. At same BMI women have higher body fat percentage than men because of different body compositions.
At 16 percent body fat a woman looks lean with good muscle definition. At 20 percent can see abdominal muscles, especially after key exercises. At 21-23 percent there is a bit of ab definition, but any six pack.
In legs and buttocks appear curves. A normal woman without surgery does not have visible abs above 20 percent body fat.
Twenty-five percent is a good fitness level for women in their 20s and 30s. Around 24 percent is truly healthy to stay at. Building muscle while keeping that percentage is good. Everyone has their own fat distribution, and the amount of lean muscle makes a big difference.
A person with lots of muscle can look like they have higher body fat percentage, if the muscle separation does not show.
Measuring body fat exactly is difficult. Except DEXA scans, you can hardly estimate body fat percentage, and even DEXA can differ with BIA devices. Essential body fat is in fat tissue, that protects organs in chest and abdomen.
Everything else equal, women burn fewer calories each pound of body weight thamen.
