📐 IBW Formula Reference
Formula Male Base (kg) Female Base (kg) Increment / inch >60 in Common Use
Devine 50.0 kg 45.5 kg +2.3 kg/in IVIG, ventilator tidal volume
Robinson 52.0 kg 49.0 kg +1.9 kg/in Drug dosing, general
Miller 56.2 kg 53.1 kg +1.41 kg/in Taller patients
Hamwi 48.0 kg 45.5 kg +2.7 kg/in (M) / +2.2 kg/in (F) Nutrition assessment
💡 Why IBW for IVIG? IVIG is dosed on ideal body weight rather than actual body weight in most clinical protocols to avoid supratherapeutic dosing in overweight or obese patients. The Devine formula is the most widely cited in pharmacy and nursing references.
📏 Adjusted Body Weight (AdjBW) Reference
BMI Category BMI Range Use for IVIG Weight Basis
Underweight < 18.5 Use actual body weight ABW
Normal weight 18.5 – 24.9 Use IBW (ABW ≈ IBW) IBW
Overweight 25.0 – 29.9 Use IBW IBW
Obese (Class I) 30.0 – 34.9 Use IBW or AdjBW IBW/AdjBW
Obese (Class II–III) ≥ 35.0 Use AdjBW (clinician confirms) AdjBW
🧮 Adjusted Body Weight Formula: AdjBW = IBW + 0.4 × (Actual Body Weight – IBW). This is used when actual body weight exceeds IBW by more than 30% (i.e., in obese patients).
💉 Common IVIG Dose Ranges by Indication
Indication Typical Dose (g/kg IBW) Frequency Notes
Primary Immunodeficiency (PID) 0.4 – 0.8 g/kg Every 3–4 weeks Trough IgG >500 mg/dL
Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) 1.0 g/kg/day × 2 1–2 days Or 0.4 g/kg/day × 5
Kawasaki Disease 2.0 g/kg Single dose With aspirin
Guillain-Barré Syndrome 0.4 g/kg/day × 5 5 consecutive days Total = 2 g/kg
CIDP (Chronic) 1.0 – 2.0 g/kg Loading, then monthly Maintenance 0.5–1 g/kg
Hypogammaglobulinemia 0.3 – 0.6 g/kg Every 4 weeks Adjust by IgG levels
⚠️ Important: These dose ranges are general references compiled from published clinical guidelines. Actual IVIG dosing must always be determined and verified by a licensed physician or clinical pharmacist based on the individual patient’s diagnosis, weight, IgG levels, and renal function.
📏 How to Get Accurate Measurements
🧍 Height: Measure without shoes on a flat floor, standing straight against a wall. Use a stadiometer if available.

⚖️ Actual Body Weight: Weigh in the morning before eating, in light clothing. Use a calibrated scale.

📌 Height in inches: 1 foot = 12 inches. For the Devine formula, height reference point is 60 inches (5 ft / 152.4 cm). Each additional inch above 60 adds 2.3 kg (male) or 2.3 kg (female) to the base.

🧪 Below 5 ft (60 in): IBW calculations using Devine are not validated for patients shorter than 5 feet. Use clinical judgment.
⚠️ Medical Disclaimer: This calculator provides estimates for educational and reference purposes only. It does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or a treatment plan. All IVIG dosing decisions must be made by a licensed healthcare professional — including a physician, pharmacist, or nurse practitioner — with full knowledge of the patient’s clinical history, current medications, renal function, and laboratory values. Never adjust medication doses based solely on this calculator.

Here is no magic number when dealing about ideal Body Weight; something what works for one person maybe absolutely not answer for another. Factors as height, sex, share of muscles to fat and size of the body all affect the calculation. Also the physical build matters, and various body types as thin, medium and thick folks react differently to different methods for control the weight.

One from the most used ways, that folks apply for estimate his ideal weight, is the Index of Physical Mass, commonly called BMI. It simply shows as your height and weight relates one to the another. Adults sort in groups as underweight, healthy weight, overweight and obese, where obesity shares in three different levels.

There Is No One Perfect Body Weight

Standard BMI normally sits a bit between 18.5 and 24.9. Even so, BMI has clear gaps. It does not consider muscular volume, bone density or real physical makeup.

Folk with many muscles could weigh more than one expects, yet stay entirely healthy, because muscle is denser than fat, at the end of everything.

There exist some different formulas, that go around for estimate ideal Body Weight. The Devine formula is used quite a lot commonly. For men it starts at 50 kg.

As base, later adds 2.3 kg. For every inch above five feet. For instance, a man of five feet and ten inches would have ideal weight about 73 kg.

There exist other ways, for instance add 1.9 kg. For every inch above five feet instead of 2.3 kg. The Robinson and Miller formulas give their own versions.

In one compariosn, that I saw, Robinson pointed 165 pounds, Miller 161 pounds, Devine 171 pounds and the Hamwi formula offered 177 pounds. All they base on same foundation, but the results range according to what you choose.

What really grabs your attention, is the percentage of body fat. Aiming between 8 and 15 percent helps look and feel strong from the view of physical fitness. If you do CrossFit or alike exercise, reach 15 percent body fat while you build muscles in reasonable BMI ranges feels well.

Studies show, that females, that do well in particular sporting fitness, commonly way between 65 and 70 kg., while men move around 85 until 90 kg.

Here the truth: bodies are very different from folk to folk. Two people can have exactly same weight, but seem entirely different because of different makeup. No single tool can describe everything about the health of anyone or predict what problems they could meet ahead.

The average American woman weighs around 171 pounds, although this pattern adjusts according to age and height. Physical makeup causes big differences. Ideal Body Weightranges exist, of course, but they never intended to be the ultimate solution.
